Regional report on Sustainable Blue Economy in Latin America and the Caribbean
Resumo
This report analyzes the current state and prospects of the Sustainable Blue Economy (SBE) in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting its potential as a development model that integrates sustainability, inclusion, and economic growth, by examining policies, regulatory frameworks, and sectoral data to assess progress at the subregional level. It also highlights a process of gradual evolution in a region where more than 27% of the population lives in coastal areas and nearly 40% of global biodiversity is concentrated. Additionally, it identifies pressures such as pollution, overfishing, and climate vulnerability. The findings highlight progress in areas such as the expansion of marine protected areas and port modernization, and underscore the growth of sustainable tourism, technological innovation, and the emergence of marine renewable energy and blue carbon markets.
