Mobilization of private finance
Abstract
This report shows how in 2024 multilateral development banks (MDBs) and development finance institutions (DFIs) achieved record levels of private finance mobilization, with total private mobilization (TPM) reaching $278.5 billion globally and $108.7 billion in middle- and low-income countries, reflecting strong year-on-year growth. This progress comes at a critical moment, as the global community remains significantly off track to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), facing an annual financing gap estimated at $4 trillion, underscoring the increasing importance of private capital in complementing public funding. The results also highlight significant growth in short-term finance and moderate increases in infrastructure investment, particularly in social sectors, while banking and business services and debt instruments account for the largest shares of mobilization. Additionally, the report introduces a more detailed breakdown by financial instrument and anticipates methodological updates to improve future reporting and better capture innovative financing mechanisms.
