The Global Emerging Markets Risk Database (GEMs) Consortium, a joint initiative of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), was established in 2009 to improve transparency and understanding of credit risk in emerging markets and developing economies. By pooling anonymized lending data from multilateral development banks (MDBs) and development finance institutions (DFIs), GEMs has created one of the world’s largest emerging market credit risk databases. GEMs generates robust statistics on default rates, recovery rates, and lending performance across sectors, regions, and income groups. These data help investors, regulators, and financial institutions strengthen risk management frameworks, calibrate credit risk models, assess capital adequacy, and make more informed investment decisions. The platform also serves as a forum for collaboration, enabling MDBs and DFIs to share expertise, align methodologies, and adopt best practices. As emerging markets face growing financing needs to achieve sustainable development goals, reliable and standardized risk data are essential to address information gaps that often distort risk perceptions and discourage investment. GEMs helps unlock capital flows by providing objective, transparent, and statistically significant evidence on historical lending performance. The report “Default and Recovery Statistics: Public Lending 1994–2025” presents pooled data from 17 member institutions, offering detailed benchmarks for public sector lending. Since 2021, GEMs has made its aggregated statistics publicly available, expanding their value beyond member institutions. In 2025, the Consortium appointed Galytix, in partnership with PwC, as its new Data Aggregator to modernize data collection and management through advanced AI solutions, enhancing analytical capabilities and insights into credit risk trends.es_ES
